Volunteers wanted to ride mobile security for the National Capital Rally 2nd and 3rd June
2018. The rally is now part of the Asia Pacific Rally Championship - so there will be more international cars and Kamikaze drivers. It also explains the earlier than anticipated date.
The DSMRA has received a request from the Brindabella Motor Sports Club for
assistance in patrolling the perimeter of their event, the NatCap Rally. The course
will be generally similar to last year, where Saturday will involve Kowen Forest and
Sunday will be out in the Brindabellas (Tidbinbilla, East West etc depending on what roads are finally approved by TAMS). The exact course will
not be available until closer to the date.
It would be useful to have around 6 riders on each day so we can split into groups of
2 or 3 to cover the course. Please note that it will be a longish day with a pretty early
start. Last year we had to be at the assembly point sometime around 6.30am and didn't
finish until around 4.40 or 5pm. But you do get to ride around and there is plenty of
opportunity to watch the rally cars from vantage points way up in the forest. By all
accounts, riders have had a good time. It will also give you an opportunity to ride some more of the Kowen
single trail.
As this year's event goes through some bicycling areas, there is
sure to be some extra work to keep bicyclists from straying into the exclusion areas.
Note: we will need to be self sufficient for fuel and food, though hopefully there will be a coffee van out thee somewhere - but don't count on it. Last year we knocked a few BBQ snags together to keep the wolf from the door.
